Azolla Cultivation for feeding Livestock

Azolla Cultivation

Livestock farmer is unable to meet out the fodder requirement of their animals due to shrinkage of  the natural grazing lands and increase  use of land for  commercial agriculture. At this difficult time  Azolla is a very good  option , as abio-fertilizer for farm and a protein rich  fodder to livestock. Azolla cultivation needs low investment and simpletechnique. It can be  gown andmanagedeasily in backyards and in farm fields and in small fodder plots. Azolla isan  aquatic floating fern . It hosts asymbiotic blue green algae, Anabaena azollae, which fixes  atmospheric nitrogen. Azolla in turn providesthe carbon source and favorable environment for the growth and of the algae. This unique symbiotic relationship that makes azolla a wonderful plant with high protein content.  The Azolla fern is fast growing and can be harvested daily from 15th day of inoculation into the water medium. It is an ideal feed for cattle pigs and poultry. Feeding of Azolla reduces the production cost of milk and meat.

Fodder production fromMoringa plant is about 100 tons per hector. Leaves of Moringa is rich in protein mineral like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulfur, and vitamins like A EB C. It contains about 16% protein and essential amino acid like Methionine, Cystine. These& trees are drought-resistant fast-growing plant cultivated in most part of India.
